Ease Your Kids’ Spring Fever With These Free, Family-friendly Indy Activities

Spring break is right around the corner, and summer break isn’t too far behind. If you’re planning any family trips in these coming months, saving up some money might be top of your mind. Sticking to a budget can be a drag, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you and your family can’t have some fun. Indianapolis is jam packed with free activities for the whole family. Here are just a few of the free events and activities happening around town this March:

Children’s Art Show at Holliday Park

March 1 to May 7, Holliday Park – Who says art and culture has to be expensive? Take your budding artists and art critics to Holliday park to view art made for and by kids, all along the Center’s main corridors, bird room, and auditorium. Then be sure to run off some energy exploring the park’s “ruins” and hiking trails!

The Art of Kite Flying

March 10, Multiple Locations – Let’s go fly a kite! This free workshop spends a morning teaching your kids the basics of building and flying a kite—then puts their skills to the test with a fun kite-flying contest! Winners will be eligible to advance to the Semi-Finals on March 17, and to then to the Finals on March 31. Good luck! (This event is held, in conjunction with Outdoor Youth Exploration, at several Indy Parks around the city. Be sure to visit your local park’s page to see if there’s a session happening near you!)

ISO’s Teddy Bear Concert Series: The Garden Symphony

March 12, Central Library – Introduce your tots to the wonders of live, symphonic music with this special performance of “The Garden Symphony,” an original story set to music by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Head to the Central Library’s Clowes Auditorium…and don’t forget to bring your teddy bears!

Congressman Carson’s Youth Opportunities Fair

March 12, Central Library – It’s never too early to introduce your kids to the world waiting for them beyond the school walls. Bring your kids and young adults to Central Library where they’ll learn about jobs, volunteer opportunities, youth development activities, and more! Businesses and non-profit organizations will be on-site just waiting to connect with you and your kids.

Hoosier Lottery Greening of the Canal

March 15, Downtown Indy Canal Walk  – For the 22nd year in a row, the Hoosier Lottery will help our fair city get into the St. Patty’s Day spirit by coloring the Canal green! Live music, dancing, and special guest appearances will be the order of the evening. The festivities start at 5pm, so get there early, and wear your favorite green garb!
