Race Into May With Family Fun

Published May 1, 2019

The entire city of Indianapolis ROARS during May. Checkered flags begin to fly throughout the city, parades are marched, and thousands upon thousands flock to the track to catch a bit of the action.

There are many kid-friendly activities to enjoy as the city hypes up for the flag to drop and the engines to come to life. Pick one or two or add several to your list. You’re sure to capture a bit of your own race fever.

Hot Wheels Race to Win

What could be more fun than a race activity at one of our biggest gems in the city, The Indianapolis Children’s Museum? There will be plenty of hands-on experience, and they may even sneak in a bit of science. This unique exhibit opens May 18th and is included with regular admission. Indycar Grand Prix

Family friendly and fun, you can head to the track to see who will come out as King of the IMS road course. Kids under 15 are free with adult admission. For more information and to purchase tickets: https://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/event-info/schedule

Practice Days

For a slightly quieter Indy 500 experience (earplugs still a must for everyone!) you can make a trip to the track and watch a few practice laps. The kids will have a chance to see the cars and the track without all the crowds.  https://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/buy-tickets/Products/?p=2ce48377-68c1-48fc-8b34-ff9ee31033c0

500 Festival Kids’ Day

It’s the largest outdoor festival for kids in the entire state, and your kids are going to love it!  Hosting events for kids of all ages such as obstacle courses, mini car racing, painting and sash making with the Festival Princesses there is something for everyone including a fun run for little feet. The best part is that it is all free of charge! Check it all out: https://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/buy-tickets/Products/?p=2ce48377-68c1-48fc-8b34-ff9ee31033c0

Festival Parade

Floats, bands and of course cars will line the streets of downtown Indy for the IPL 500 Festival Parade on May 25th beginning at 11:45. https://www.500festival.com/parade/

Celebrate at Home

You can enjoy the excitement of the 500 from the comfort of your own home if you get a little creative. Make your own track on the sidewalk with chalk and see who has the fastest matchbox car. Grab some construction paper and created your own checkered flags or draw your dream race car. Make a few 500 Floats with cola and ice cream and settle in to watch the parade on TV or make a trip to the library to check out some good books on the sport of racing.

Gentlemen, start your engines and get ready to enjoy the most significant month in our beautiful city!
